What happens in counselling?

Deciding to come to counselling can be a huge decision - talking to a stranger about things that feel so personal isn't the 'normal' way of things is it? But it can be so freeing, because I sit in front of you without any preconceptions - I am there for you as you are in the moment, no judgement, no expectations, offering a space that is entirely yours. I wont push you to talk about things you're not ready to, I'm not there to analyse you or tell you what to do, there is no right or wrong way to feel - I believe in your ability to find the answers for yourself once you feel safe enough to explore whatever it is that is tough for you right now, and I will be there, authentically and empathically, to support you in doing that.

'We think we listen, but very rarely do we listen with real understanding, true empathy. Yet listening, of this very special kind, is one of the most potent forces for change that I know'.

Carl Rogers.

The process

Whether you're new to counselling or not, it can feel daunting starting with a new therapist. I hope to make that first step as comfortable as possible.

Initial contact

If the information on my website has encouraged you to reach out you're welcome to get in touch with me by email, text/Whatsapp or through the contact form here.

I aim to respond within 48 hours.

Introductory Call

I offer a free 20 minute introductory call. I'm a big believer that you need to get a sense of a counsellor before you start therapy as being able to form a strong, trusting relationship is vital - this provides that opportunity. Its a chance for you to ask any questions you may have about the process, to get an idea of how I work and to ensure that Person-Centred therapy will be a good fit for you.

There is no obligation for you to continue the process after this call.

First Session

If you feel comfortable working with me, and I feel confident I can provide the therapy you need, the next step is to book the first full session. This can be in-person or online, depending on your requirements.

The first session is your opportunity to share what has brought you to counselling and what you are hoping to get from the process. You start wherever you need to, at whatever depth feels comfortable for you. My role is to listen to fully understand your experience and offer you my reflections to help support your exploration.

Ahead of the first session I will send you some documents which outlines the 'Working Agreement' and Privacy Policy. We will discuss these documents in the first session, covering areas such as confidentiality and cancellation policy, to ensure that we are both clear about the way in which we will work together to keep the sessions safe and ethical.

Continuing Therapy.

Attending counselling regularly helps to build a trusting relationship - this is proven to benefit steady therapeutic progress. If you decide to continue your counselling with me I recommend weekly or fortnightly sessions. I understand that everyone's situation is unique and we can discuss what frequency works best for you.

Depending on the reason you seek counselling the process can be short term or open ended. Generally, therapy will likely last several months, and throughout we would regularly check in about how you are finding things and whether counselling continues to be helpful. You are always in control of how long you choose to stay.

My location

My practice is based in Eton Wick, 5 minutes from the M4 (Jct 7) and easily accessible from Windsor, Maidenhead, Slough and surrounding areas.
